Barcelona -Eat II

After a long week of dining out at so many fantastic restaurants in Barcelona, I feel like I would be doing this city and it’s restaurants a disservice if I didn’t add a second Barcelona Eat column.  This time around, I’m mixing in a few international fare restaurants in with the bunch, to give any locals or long-term visitors a good variety.

Now, with so many new favorites, I’ll have to find a way to work them into my schedule as often as I return to my old culinary stomping grounds, These restaurants will make you want to extend your stay in Barcelona just to try them all.

Bar Canete

Having opened a little over a year ago, I couldn’t believe that I didn’t know about this place until this weekend.  What a gem, situated just off of Las Ramblas!  Canete is a mix of retro chic décor with an open kitchen / bar dining concept.   Here you’ll find modern takes on Andalucian culinary classics.  Reserve one of the few tables in house and share a variety of amazing, small plated dishes with your friends.  A few tops on my list, the eggplant with honey sauce appetizer, the tacos de atun and zamborinas  main courses and the mil hojas pastry for dessert.  If you don’t get a table, no worries, the bar is just as comfortable, and even livelier of an ambience.

Boca Grande

One of the newer “see and be seen” style restaurants on the Barcelona dining scene.  Boca Grande has the elegance of a French bistro, but with an eclectic spin.  The raw bar here is fantastic and it was my first time trying the Catalan delicacy of sea urchins, which are a must do as well as any of the fresh seafood at this restaurant.  A really unique take on the Spanish “Huevos Estrelladas” are their house made French fries topped with Iberian ham, fried egg and black truffles, the perfect side to any of the meat or fish dishes.  Make sure at some point to check out the bathroom, fully equipped with a dj booth, it’s one of the most unique in Spain.

Rustic environment for a great typical Catalan meal, where almost everything is preparred on the open fire grill or “a la brasa” as they say here.  Must tries: “Escalivada” roasted vegetables with a traditional romescu sauce and “Escaixada” semi cured bacalao starter preparred with olive oil, then the main course “Secreto Iberico” which is tender Iberian grilled pork.  Be sure to ask for seconds of the pan con tomate, their house grilled bread covered in tomato, garlic and olive oil, which goes perfectly with all three dishes. Save room for a bit of desert and give the coconut flan a try.

Tapioka Restaurante

Traditional Brazilian recipies mixed with a modern flair of Asian fusion.  Hands down my favorite for Brazilian  “Picana” steak, and also a front runner in town for sushi, with their tropical inspired “Bahia Uramaki”.  You’ll find the setting to be open and modern, yet mixed with the bright tropical colors of the large wall murals depicting the Bahia region.

Restaurante La Locanda

Here they aim to be your typical neighborhood Italian restaurant, where the food speaks for itself, insuring that the locals return often.  This goal of La Locanda is accomplished perfectly from their Italian owner using his family recipes to the wine and ingredients for the dishes coming from the motherland.  It’s the ideal place to meet for dinner with a group of friends before going out for a night in the Born.  A few of my recommendations from their ample menu, for starters, the Tricolore Salad, Beef Carpaccio with arugula and parmesan and my personal favorite, the Fagotini (tiny bags made of bresoala filled with stracchino cheese.)  For a main course, the Selection of Ravioli where you try one of each flavor of the house, or one of the many wood oven pizzas or calzones, The Gladiator was amazing!

Mount Lavinia Shri Lankan Cuisine Learn N Lunch

One of the only places that I’ve encountered in Barcelona that does Asian food right, and that was the exact motivation behind Chef Faraaj Hashim’s concept.  Mount Lavinia offers these unique cooking class style lunches on Wednesdays beginning at 1:30 pm and between the instructions and dining on the multi dish meal, the event lasts about two hours.  Make sure to sign up in advance for this great culinary learning experience.  You’re sure to leave satisfied with having tried the amazing spicy flavors of Shri Lankan cuisine, learned a little and quite possibly met a new friend.

  1. Fantastic items from you, man. I have be aware your stuff previous to and you are simply too magnificent.
    I actually like what you have bought here, certainly like what you’re stating and the best way by which you assert it. You make it entertaining and you continue to care for to stay it smart. I can not wait to learn much more from you. That is really a terrific site.
